20 November. 2001 Late this summer we, Charlie Belford and myself, harvested the six hierloom varieties of wheat that we sowed on 15 acres nearby. The land is part of the Marin French Cheese Factory that sits on 850 acres of coastal Marin dairy land and woods. This was once a dairy but their French type cheeses took over from the milking many years ago so that their land is leased out to neighboring dairymen for silage. This year I built for them a large wood fired brick oven, 6'x 7' on the hearth, ane imported a diving arm mixer as well and now there has been created a delightful space for some really creative baking. What better to go with all that wonderful soft local cheese? Now we have enough wheat for over 10,000 loaves of bread from just outside the window! Very soon we will be starting up the bakery and testing out the various wheats for performance. They are for the most part dryland varieties with low gluten so it is going to be very interesting how they will perform . In the mean time seed is available for anyone interested to plant some on a small scale. Varieties available are; Federation, Hard Federation, White Austrian, Baart, and a little Turkey Red.
